This publication presents decentralized wastewater treatment solutions (DEWATS) adapted in ADB-financed projects to provide cost-effective and sustainable infrastructure and sanitation systems in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

DEWATS is considered ecoefficient, flexible, and cost-effective for its capacity to complement or serve as a strong alternative to other centralized wastewater treatment and management systems. It can be customized and applied according to the type of wastewater produced in urban areas, as being done in the projects discussed here. These examples from the Lao People’s Democratic can also be applied or adapted according to needs of urban and peri-urban communities in other developing countries.
